As a non-Senators fan who lives in Ottawa, I would like to apologize formally to any and all NHL and hockey fans out there for the ridiculous voting results that led to four, yes four, Ottawa Senators named today as the fans’ choices to start the NHL All-Star game. Stuffing the ballot box for undeserving local players epitomizes small-town, bush-league fandom. But, hey, it’s Ottawa Senators fans we’re talking about right?
Let’s see:
- Getting consistently out-cheered by pocketfuls of out-of-town fans in their home arena? Check.
- Putting up with home arena ushers asking opponent’s fans to quiet down and in some cases, expel them for cheering too loudly? Check.
- Booing Zdeno Chara, because management did not offer him a contract, instead deciding to hitch their cart to Wade Redden? Check, because, obviously, that was all Chara’s fault.
- Being more interested in a senseless rivalry than the team’s overall performance? Check.
- Blindly accepting whatever excuses management comes up with for the team’s lackluster showing? Check.
- Stuffing the ballot box… Oh wait, we covered that already.
Never mind putting up with a relic of the 80’s as a general manager, who has demonstrated absolutely no ability to comprehend the salary cap system and who keeps hiring and firing head coaches with no or limited NHL experience.
Yup, class and hockey IQ all abounds in the Nation's Capital.
It just gets so embarrassing to witness this circus year-in and year-out. Now, the rest of NHL fandom has to share in it. Four Senators voted in to start the All-star game. Out of six starters.
Egads, NHL fans, I am so sorry.
